Qualification for Burial

Cemetery

  • Koreans who have been residing overseas before December 31th of 1988 (limited to those who have relatives as of the burial date and reserved burial date among those who are residing overseas and have Korean nationality or those who are residing overseas and used to have Korean nationality)
  • As direct descendants of Koreans who emigrated overseas before 1945, those who were born overseas and have been residing overseas to the burial date (limited to those who have relatives as of the burial date and reserved burial date)
  • Others whom the Minister of Health and Welfare deemed qualified to be buried in the Mang-Hyang Cemetery
  • Spouses of the overseas Koreans that fall under the aforementioned No. 1 and 2, and spouses of those who fall under No. 3

Charnel

  • Among those qualified for burial in the cemetery according to paragraph 1 of the Rule on the Operation of the Manghyang Cemetery, people who have no relatives as of the burial date and reserved burial date
  • Among those qualified for burial in the cemetery according to paragraph 1 of the Rule on the Operation of the Manghyang Cemetery, people who want to be enshrined in the charnel
  • As of the burial date and reserved burial date, those who have been residing overseas for at least 20 years
  • Those who returned to Korea for permanent residence after having resided overseas against their will for reasons of forcible conscription, etc.
  • Others whom the Minister of Health and Welfare deemed qualified to be enshrined at the charnel
  • According to the article 10 of the Rule on the Operation of the Manghyang Cemetery (moving remains buried in the cemetery to charnel), those who want to move from cemetery to charnel
  • Spouses of the enshrined according to the aforementioned No. 1 to No. 6

※ Charnel reservation is applicable to those aged 70 and over as of the application date.

Restricted Persons

Those who did harm to the national interest

Those who were criticized for anti-ethnic behaviors in the overseas Korean community

Other Matters

The fee for using the cemetery and the price of tombstone should be paid online.

The original of reservation application form should be submitted.

  • For a spouse of the buried or the reserved to be buried together (or to reserve for burial together), documents (family relations certificate, and copy be expelled, etc.) should be submitted to prove the marital relations.
  • In the case of those who acquired foreign nationality, the confirmation by the recommending organization is needed.

Burial Application

The reserved

  • Notify the date of burial (inform the administration office at least one day before)
  • Identify the recommending organization in the burial application form(the Korean Mission Chief of the country of residence, President of the Central Headquarters of the Korean Residents Union in Japan or President of the Korean Red Cross)
  • Submit the verification that the deceased resided overseas up until the burial date with the application form
  • Submit death confirmation documents such as the certificate of death and certificate of cremation
  • Submit documents that can verify family relations (whether a relative is present) including the family relations certificate and copy be expelled, etc.

Those who are not reserved

  • As long as they are eligible for application, the application procedures are the same as above.
  • Submit the inscription and pay the fee.

Payment Guide

  • Cemetery fees: To the Office of National Cemetery for Overseas Koreans
  • Tombstone cost, tombstone pedestal cost and tombstone carving cost (fees for engraving on the tombstone): The bereaved should directly pay the amount to the company that signed with a unit-price contract with the cemetery
    ※ Tombstone cost, tombstone pedestal cost and tombstone carving cost (fees for engraving on the tombstone) are subject to change according to conclusion of an annual unit-price contract.
