Burial Application

1. Eligible Applicants (Relatives)

The spouse, direct descendants, ascendants, or siblings of the burial candidate.

The head of an administrative, medical, or protective institution that provided treatment, care, or support for the burial candidate prior to their death.

Any other individual who is, in practice, responsible for handling the burial candidate’s remains.

2. Required Documents

Overseas Koreans Form No. 1

One copy of a document verifying the applicant’s relationship to the burial candidate (e.g., family register, family relationship certificate, marriage certificate, or other relevant documents)

One copy of the applicant’s ID card

One copy of the burial candidate’s death certificate or cremation certificate

One copy of a grave relocation certificate or reburial certificate (only if relocating remains to the cemetery)

One copy of a document verifying that the burial candidate resided overseas before December 31, 1988, or lived abroad for at least 20 years as of the application date.

※ If the burial application form has been certified by the head of a Korean diplomatic mission abroad or by a representative of a Korean community organization recognized by the Minister of Health and Welfare, this document is not required.

Individuals who were forcibly taken abroad and later returned to Korea (including those whose remains were repatriated with government administrative or financial support) Form No. 1-2

One copy of a document verifying that the burial candidate was a victim of forced migration—such as a former Japanese military “comfort woman”, a Sakhalin Korean, or an individual whose remains were repatriated through a government-led remains repatriation project.

※ If the application form has been certified by a relevant institution or organization, this document is not required.

One copy of a document confirming eligibility for burial at the National Mang-Hyang Cemetery

Spouses of eligible burial candidates Form No. 1-4

One copy of a document verifying that the burial candidate is the spouse of an individual already interred at the National Mang-Hyang Cemetery

3. Burial and Application Procedure

Burial Procedure

Burial Application (Relatives) → Burial Approval (Director of the Office of the National Mang-Hyang Cemetery) → Burial Execution

Document Submission

Submit the burial application form* along with the required supporting documents to the Office of the National Mang-Hyang Cemetery at least three days before the desired burial date (Email: nmhc@korea.kr)

* The applicant must sign or affix their seal in two sections of the application form: the bottom of the front page and the privacy consent form on the back page.
